“But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13
When you wake up in the morning, how do you decide what you’re going to wear that day? Does your mom have your clothes already laid out for you? Do you roll out of bed and pick up whatever’s nearest your feet on the floor? I would say that for most people, they decide what to wear by what’s going on for the day. Say, if you look outside and it’s -30, you’ll probably put on some long pants and sweater, rather than shorts and a t-shirt. If you’re going for a job interview that day, you might put on something that’s clean and a little nicer. There’re some things that I attempt to put on every day no matter the day. Hanging on my bathroom mirror, there’s a Bible verse and a couple of quotes. Since I generally go into the bathroom, first thing in the morning, I read these words every morning:
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3:12-14
Every morning while I’m getting dressed, physically, I try to clothe myself spiritually with the five virtues mentioned in the above verse. Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience are not easy garments to wear. Especially if you are not used to them, they’ll feel uncomfortable to you, like wearing a new pair of shoes. But if you’ve got a good pair of new shoes, you know that you have to spend time breaking them in, and once they are worn enough, they will feel good and comfortable.
“And over all these,” the verse continues to say, “put on love…” Love is mentioned many times in the New Testament as the most important thing. It is the one thing that will hold everything together. Because, like 1 Corinthians 13 says, “if I do not have love, I am only a noisy bell or a crashing cymbal.” I actually like how Mother Theresa sums it up:
“Love each other as God loves each one of you, with an intense and particular love. Be kind to each other: It is better to commit faults with gentleness than to work miracles with unkindness.” Mother Theresa
And then in the Bible 1 Peter 4:8 says, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
As today is Valentine’s Day, I felt that it is the perfect day to talk about love but instead of spending the day thinking about the romantic love that today is usually about, think about this Godly love that I just spent time talking through here. Happy Valentine’s Day!
